By carrying your Yale ID, you help foster a secure environment and ensure a seamless experience with access to university buildings. While some buildings are open to the public without an ID, there are many door readers that require swiping your Yale ID for entry.

General Access
Many academic and public spaces on campus have open hours when all active students, faculty, employees, and affiliates can gain entry to a door by swiping their Yale ID card at the card reader. This is referred to as “General Access”
Assigned Access
Access to more secured facilities may need to be requested and assigned. If you need specific access to a building or extended hours to an open building, contact your business office or the operations manager for the department.
Access to campus buildings is controlled by the Yale Public Safety Systems Access Control team in conjunction with the building administrator and/or the registrar.
Requests and Support
Access Control can be reached via email at 432.open@yale.edu or by calling (203) 432-OPEN (6736).
Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues after business hours review the troubleshooting guide or contact the Security Central Alarm Station.
Door Schedules
Most doors on campus are secure and require a card swipe to enter, but there are specific buildings on campus that will have an accessible predefined entry during set hours, or a “green lit” perimeter door.
Access Authorizers
Access requests must be approved and submitted by the appropriate “Access Authorizer” that manages the department or building.
Access Practices
All students, employees, and affiliates must use their ID to access secured facilities. Gaining entry without scanning your ID, such as following others through a locked door (tailgating) or asking someone to let you in, is strictly prohibited.
