Spouses

Spouses and same sex civil union partners of students and faculty/staff are eligible for a Yale University access card. While these access cards do not allow for building access, they can be used at the libraries, museums, gym (membership fee may apply), Yale transit and other venues throughout campus. Building access exceptions would be Yale Day Care Centers and Yale Graduate on campus Housing.
 
Individuals will need to provide the following information to the departmental sponsor in order to obtain an access card, proof of marriage/civil union must be provided using one of the following forms of documentation:

  • Marriage certificate (in English)
  • Civil union document (only applies to same sex civil unions)
  • J2 VISA with passports containing both spouses’ name’s
  • Once the departmental sponsor receives the SI final approval, they must forward that email to the ID Center before an access card can be issued. Please wait 24 hours after the completion/approval of the form before arriving at the ID Center.

Student Spouse Affiliates – In order to obtain an access card, the student and spouse must go to the student’s Registrar and present proof of marriage/civil union as indicated above.

  • Once the marriage/civil union is confirmed by the Registrar, the Registrar will have to fill out a Sponsored Identity (SI) online form to start the ID card process.
  • Registrar (requestor and approver) will receive email notification of approval.
  • The spouse will then receive an email during this process from Registrar.
  • Spouse would then stop by ID center to pick up their SI (and bring photo ID) 

Faculty/Staff Spouse Affiliates – Spouses/same sex civil union partners of faculty/staff follow the below process to obtain an access card:
 
In order to obtain an spousal access ID card, the employee and spouse must go to their department business manager and present proof of marriage/civil union as indicated above.

  • Once the marriage/civil union is confirmed by the department business manager, they will have to fill out a Sponsored Identity (SI) online form to start the ID card process.
  • Department (requestor and approver) will receive email notification of approval.
  • The spouse will then receive an email during this process from department.
  • Spouse would then stop by ID center to pick up their SI (and bring photo ID).
  • Please wait 24 hours after the completion/approval of the form before arriving at the ID Center.
